When the 1911 World Series came around, New York was buzzing over the their Giants. They had been a top team since their last appearance in the series in 1905, but never able to seal the pennant. Hard luck losses including the 1908 Merkle Game had to leave the fans of the Giants wondering if they were cursed, but 1911 found the team back on top and the fans and organization responded. They turned out in record numbers and even ordered brand new uniforms for the team to wear, pitch black with a large white logo on the sleeve. Photographers turned out in force and the smile on the face of Christy Mathewson, captured beautifully by photographer Paul Thompson affirms the optimism of the club. A fantastic image in great condition, this captures Mathewson before the start of game four at Shibe Park with its famous wall in the background. There is a stamp on the back of this image from photographer Paul Thompson and although light, the presence assures that this is a vintage 1911 specimen capturing the greatest figure in the game at the height of his career. An important image as only a handful of photographs exist of Mathewson in his uniform he only wore six times during the 1911 World Series!
