Baseball is Americas National Pastime, but in 1910 it was still mostly played by men who were viewed as "rough and unsavory". It took a shift in American culture and the "Baseball Fever" of the 1910's to change this perception. As the game evolved to include huge numbers of fans from the upper class, special photographers took advantage of this new found interest and focused on the artistic nuances and intricacies of the sport. It was during this time that "Baseball as Art" began to surface with extreme close ups of some of the most important men in the game and their features that made them successful. One of the best examples of such artwork is this offered panoramic style horizontal photograph showing the Batting Grip of the greatest hitter that ever lived, Ty Cobb! Issued by NEA and stamped from August 1918, Cobb is showing his grip on the bat for the camera from the left handed side of the box in full uniform. The style of Jersey Sleeves absolutely pinpoints this to the 1918 Detroit Tigers season (road jersey) and the notation of Cobb is written on the back by the uncredited photographer from NEA. Condition is beautiful and clarity is outstanding. This is the only vintage photo of Cobb's Grip that we know of in the hobby (we sold this exact copy a few years earlier)!
