In addition to being one of the greatest hitters of all time, Tris Speaker was widely regarded as the greatest outfielder who ever lived and one who could turn doubles and triples into outs like nobody before him. Its no wonder that when the photographers at NEA decided to do artistic close ups of the "hand and feet" of the greatest baseball players in America between 1918-1920, they chose Tris Speaker to show how he fields the ball. The offered large photograph from NEA (file marked from 1920 but almost certainly taken around 1918) is a stunning example of how baseball can be transformed into art by focusing on the small details of the game. Speaker's glove appears soft and supple with his throwing hand ready to make a technically perfect catch. Condition and quality make this an outstanding example and easily among the greatest of the "hands and feet" series. A true work of baseball art!
