Large 1945 photograph of three soldiers hunkered down on the sands of Iwo Jima at the height of the conflict. Surrounded by death and desolation, they have constructed a sign indicating how far from home they were with Albany and Queens listed at 8600 miles in one direction and their destination, Tokyo, listed at 700 miles the other way. The photo is a mat finish dark room image that appears by all accounts to be original to the 1940's and mounted on old artist board for display in a gallery so the back is not visible. We feel this is original and as such is a work of WWII art that we have never seen before! The photo measures 10.5x13.25 but the complete item with artist board measures about 15x20.
