Large 1945 photograph of a lone American soldier standing next to the exact flag that was raised by Marines atop Mt. Surabachi just moments earlier and looking over the island while the conflict still raged. While the soldier and photographer are not identified, it is likely this is a Joe Rosenthal image as few photographers went to the top of the mountain during the conflict. Regardless, the moment is poignant and deep with this vintage 1940's example being the only specimen we have ever seen in any form. An oversize, double weight masterpiece of photography that is sure to excite even the most casual WWII and American history collectors. A true work of art that belongs in a museum or gallery, the photo is essentially perfect with note to just a hint of wear at the top from when the photo paper was cut in 1945.
