In the Summer of 1927, the photographers at Acme ran a series of photographs (5 or 6 different images) of Lou Gehrig that they titled "Watch Your Laurels Babe". At the time Gehrig was tied with Ruth at 24 Home Runs and it seemed that the torch might be passed. As part of the series the photographers focused on the eyes and batting grip of Lou, as well as his hitting form and fielding prowess. The offered crystal clear silver gelatin photograph is the fielding image from this rare series showing Gehrig in full uniform and throwing the ball at first base. The use of light and shadows are amazing and the unnamed photographer was truly a master of his craft. Photo is so clear and precise that the laces on his glove and the wrinkles on his undershirt can be seen with the naked eye and the snow white jersey contrasts nicely with the shadows created from the imposing structure of Yankee Stadium in the background. Acme stamp graces the back (along with a later filing date from NEA) and a lengthy paper caption with the great line "An excellent series of photos by Acme show Lou Gehrig doing his stuff recently". Photo has some corner wear with chipping and a crease on the lower left (which is really just a light fold line from production). A beautiful image from an important season for Gehrig and the "Murderers Row" Yankees!
