Completely original silver gelatin portrait photograph of young Ed Walsh of the Chicago White Sox in uniform and taken during his rookie year of 1904. This is an original example from photographer Carl Horner, taken off his negative and as such is one of the only originals known to exist. The image was originally sent in cabinet form to the Cleveland Plain Dealer by photographer Carl Horner as the photographer and the newspaper (one of the oldest in country) had some type of an agreement as there were many Horner's in the archives of the Plain Dealer. Because of the bulk of cabinet photographs to store in folders and their lack of flexibility in the publishing process, the Plain Dealer peeled most of these from their Horner white cabinet backings and used them extensively throughout the period between 1902-1920 in publications. The offered image of Walsh was removed from the white cabinet backing (but remnants of the original Horner cabinet remain on the back) and it was at one point in time painted on the upper right corner for a story (probably about the 1906 World Series) but the figure of Walsh still presents elegantly. The 112 year old silver gelatin masterpiece retains its deep clarity and contrast with individual hairs on his head visible under magnification. This is the most famous image ever taken of Walsh and it was used to make his T206 baseball card and reproduced a million times in print, with this being one of only a handful of originals that has survived the ravages of time. A significant new discovery that has never been offered to the general public before!
