1942 Was the beginning of massive race riots in Detroit and this photograph illustrates perhaps the birth of intense racial tensions in the area. In response to crime and overcrowding in the slums of the city, Detroit tried to build a new "housing project" in between an existing white neighborhood and a black neighborhood call the "Sojourner Truth Project." Both neighboring communities objected and the tensions turned to violence in early 1942 when the first residents were moved in. The offered photograph is a unique new discovery from a local Detroit photographer and offered here for the first time showing black protesters in the streets with white onlookers and several white police officers in uniform. A touching and disturbing piece of American history offered here for the first time ever! There is a little wear and creasing from news-room handling but otherwise the photo is essentially perfect with a few editorial marks as well.
