Jimmy Gleason was one of the top young drivers of his time when tragedy struck in Syracuse. A four time competitor at the Indianapolis 500, he had just come off his best finish in 1931 finishing sixth and a week before this photo was taken he had just won his first major race in Altoona. On the afternoon of September 12, 1931 Gleason was running near the lead in Syracuse when he lost control of his car and was ejected at full speed and was killed instantly. The offered tragic photograph shows his car flipped over after the event and the body of Gleason being attended to about twenty yards away, lifeless on the ground. Early racing fans seem barely fazed by the event, as was the life of a race car driver during the pre-war era. A fantastic image in great shape, this is the only example of Gleason's fatal crash we have ever seen. Issued by NEA and stamped on the back along with a detailed handwritten note as well.
