In 1934 there was a baseball tournament in Venezuela for supremacy of Latin America. At the time it made little impact on the world of organized baseball, but as time rolled on it would become one of the most important series of the era. The top team was the Concordia squad led by established Hall of Famer Martin DiHigo and with an young catcher showing some promise named Josh Gibson! Seen here, the members of the Concordia team are in the center of the image wearing their jerseys and warm-up jackets flanked by the Tigres del Licey (left) and Escogido club (right) before the start of the series. While Dihigo is clearly in the photograph (first guy on the left wearing warm-up jacket and with hands on his hips, it is impossible to tell with certainty that Gibson is in fact the man we think he might be (center the left of the executive wearing gray suit). He replaced Johnny Mize in the lineup after Mize left for spring training and Mize is clearly not in the photo. The photo is not clear enough to completely specify the inclusion of Gibson and he may or may not have joined the team by late January. More research is needed as to Gibson, but the postcard is clearly a rare and important piece of Negro League baseball history and could end up being one of the top images of its kind if Gibson could be positively identified. Others in the photo are Rap Dixon, Totelo Vargas, Alejandro San etc. One of the finest postcards we have ever offered!
