Tillie Shafer had a great year in 1913 but it would inexplicably be his last with the Giants. He was one of the top hitting infielders for the team, batting .287 and helping lead his team to the World Series, but after the season he would retire to enter into business with his wealthy California family. The real reason, he was a slender and fast athlete who was branded with feminine nicknames (like Tillie) and the subject of harassment by his teammates. An unfortunate byproduct of a different and less tolerant time, he is a classic story of what could have been had he been able to play a long career in baseball. From the archives of Underwood and Underwood and offered here for the first time ever.
