Sometimes it is hard to fathom that every single major league baseball player, even those from 135 years ago, were some mother's little boy. The offered letter here was written to Robert G. Allen, famous major leaguer who was the Ozzie Smith of the 1890's as the best fielding shortstop in baseball, a subject in the 1889-1890 Old Judge baseball card set (N172) and casualty of one of the worst beaning's in baseball history in 1897, from his mother and wishing him a happy 23rd birthday. He was in his first season in the National League and she goes into detail about his family, baseball, and how lonely she was without her baby boy at home! A touching four page document that humanizes a man who up til now was just a face on some baseball cards. The letter is stamped from the post office in his hometown of Marion, Ohio and addressed to him in Philadelphia. Written on July 9th, 1890, this is a great piece of baseball history that has never been offered before to the public.
