Large 1903 vintage photograph of head coach Pop Warner as he stood and watched his Carlisle Indian School football team run through drills before the start of a game. There are three groups of players running through drills in full uniform, but with Warner dressed to the nines and the stands packed, this is clearly before a game and not a routine practice. The phot is highly silvered and absolutely genuine to the early 1900's based on the photography style and the grid marks on the football field (which were abandoned early in the 20th century). The figure of Warner is easily recognized and the players are also clearly Native American, but vintage handwritten marks on the back cement the provenance as it has the words "Signal Practice" and "Glenn Warner Teaching Indians" written on the back as well as what appears to be "Nov 6, 03" which would have been they day before they played Georgetown. One of the most important early football images we have ever handled and it is being offered here for the first time ever!
