1920 Intense portrait photograph of New York Yankees pitcher Carl Mays and posed in uniform at the ballpark. In August of this year he would throw an inside pitch to popular shortstop Ray Chapman of the Indians and accidently kill him in the process. This is the only dated 1920 image of Mays we have ever seen and it presents beautifully, with exceptional detail and contrast. The photo has some wear to the edges and a few pinholes from editorial use, but it looks great overall. Encapsulated by PSA as a Type 1, this is an important piece of baseball history, shrouded in tragedy!
