Charles Conlon was a genius behind the lens and a pioneer of baseball photography, but his camera was almost exclusively pointed at the ballplayers and rarely at the men behind the scenes. He was also a man of tremendous foresight though and this must have played a role when he took a photograph of young and still unproven manager of the Boston Red Sox, Ed Barrow. When this photograph was taken, Barrow had just returned to the big leagues and the Red Sox were not supposed to be very good. He guided the team to the World Series and cemented his legacy as one of the top brains in the game. He would architect the rise of the Yankees a few years later and become famous for his efforts, but THIS photograph taken as he just signed to manage the Red Sox is the only example we have ever seen! A double weight beauty which was a rarity for Conlon, the image is almost perfect! An important image of one of the most important figures in baseball history.
