The 1910 heavyweight championship fight between James J. Jeffries and Jack Johnson was one of the most important sporting events of all time. Billed as white v. black, good v. evil, and with social overtones that went way beyond the sport, this was a media circus. Here we have a pre-fight photograph showing Jack Johnson standing ready for the battle and being announced by the greatest announcer of his time, Billy Jordan. The fight took place in the sun of Reno, Nevada and lived up to the hype, except that the bad guy won! The photo is in essentially perfect condition with a crease on the lower right and it is one of the finest images from the bout we have seen. The photo is a slight restrike from the 1930's but it presents beautifully and still has nearly a hundred years of age to it.
