Despite being one of the wealthiest and well known men in the history of baseball, relatively few images of Albert G. Spalding were ever taken. After he made millions selling sporting goods in the 19th century, when photography was expensive and scarce, he became sort of a reclusive figure. He ran his company from behind the scenes and was rarely seen in public. Rumor has it that he despised getting old and did not like being photographed, which would explain the fact that only two or three studio sittings were done near the end of his life and his guide books re-used older photographs from his youth. In twenty years of digging through archives and scouring auctions, we have only seen perhaps ten images of Spalding from after his career as an active player and this c. 1910 portrait is the only example of it's type we have ever seen! Mounted to thick paper, but this could be removed for authentication at PSA , which will result in a Type 1 guaranteed given the gelatin surface and paper fibers. An important piece of baseball photography that is being offered here for the first time ever!
