Large c. 1860's cabinet photograph of an extremely early baseball game in progress at a school. The batter is ready for the pitch and fielders are poised, ready for action. Spectators and players are wearing outfits that are absolutely from the 1860's some of which appear to even be Civil War uniforms and pillbox hats worn by the Union Army! There are spectators all around, including a large number of women, which is a cool touch as well. The style of photography is consistent with our assessment of the 1860's and is likely taken just after the Civil War c. 1868-69. This is the earliest image of a baseball game in progress that we have ever seen and it ranks among the oldest and largest from the era known in the world. There is some light staining from age (which could be repaired) but it does not impede the action at all and is mostly reserved to the cabinet mount. An important discovery that is worthy of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown!
