It was the saddest thing seen on a baseball diamond since Lou Gehrig stepped up to the microphone in 1939 and delivered his "Luckiest Man" speech. Largely hidden from the public during his illness, Babe Ruth made a dramatic appearance at Yankee Stadium in 1947 to bid his fans and teammates a farewell. Ravaged by disease and looking like a shadow of his former self, Ruth was barely audible but still managed to get a few sentences out before stepping off the field. An important image from one of the most memorable and unfortunate events in baseball history, this offered specimen is a large and beautiful image that remains in nice shape and with exceptional clarity and focus. This is a blank backed specimen with considerable age to it that appears to be a 1950's or 1960's example. A piece of baseball art that is the only example we have ever seen.
