Important and rare 1863 CDV photograph of President Abraham Lincoln, standing in a long coat and taken just before the battle of Gettysburg (April 1863). This was perhaps the most turbulent time in Lincoln's life as he had just freed the slaves through the Emancipation Proclamation, but had yet to see the Civil War turn in his favor. You can feel the strain on his face but he tries to strike a regal pose to inspire faith in his cause. Taken by noted photographer Thomas Le Mere, these are among the most sought after of all Lincoln CDV's and are also among the rarest with this being the only example we have ever handled. From the collection of early photograph historian Frederick Meserve and used in the publication of his books on Lincoln photography! The condition and quality are both absolutely outstanding!
