Large c. 1905 photograph of an early black baseball player in uniform and showing off his batting form. While not identified, the quality of the uniform and age of the player easily lead to the conclusion that this was a professional player as even the best college teams of the time were not this well decked out! Few black teams of the era wore black uniforms and the distinctive socks could help lead to a team identification, which could be a major find. Regardless, any images of early black players from this era in uniform are extremely scarce and desirable, with this being one of the finest we have ever seen in twenty years! The cardboard cabinet backing has wear and pinholes but the photo portion is mostly unscathed, just barely touched by two pinholes. The quality of the image is perfect and the social overtones are easily palpable. An important piece of baseball history that tells a story without a single word!
