Large 1927 portrait photograph of the great Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees. While most images of Ruth capture him smiling and looking every bit the jolly icon of the diamond, this masterpiece of photography captures Ruth looking intense and determined. One of the clearest and most concise portraits ever taken of Ruth, you can see every wrinkle and imperfection on his aging face as he seems to be in a thoughtful trance, contemplating his record setting season. Issued by Underwood and Underwood and from their archives, this is absolutely a Type 1 and guaranteed to pass certification by PSA. This is one of only a handful of example of this image known to exist and it comes from an Underwood and Underwood photo-shoot that also produced the Lou Gehrig photograph that we are offing in this auction as well. For our money, this is one of the top ten portraits of Ruth ever taken! The photo presents well with a small crease on the upper left and far right borders, but nothing that affects the stoic figure of Ruth.
