Jake Daubert is one of the most tragic figures of his era, well on his way to a Hall of Fame career, he unexpectedly died from illness after the 1924 season. Had he been able to play just a few more years to pass some much needed milestone numbers, he would already be in. Before he was the top fielding and hardest hitting first baseman in the National League however, he was a young man playing for the Marion, Ohio team in the Ohio-Penn League which is where we find him here. Large silver gelatin photograph dated from 1908 on the back (actually from 1907) is the only example of Daubert from Marion we know of and this is the earliest image of Daubert in uniform that exists! From an Ohio archive, this is a gem for collectors of early images of ballplayers. Condition is quite nice with some mild handling wear and a bit of artistic tracing done by the newspaper for publication.
