On opening day 1941, the Yankees threw young Phil Rizzuto out there as the leadoff hitter. He hit the first pitch he ever saw in the big leagues to the shortstop and while he was thrown out, he would eventually become one of the greatest Yankees of all time and land in Cooperstown. The offered large photograph from the International News captures this exact moment when the Phil Rizzuto era officially began in New York! An interesting photograph as we do not think another pre-war Hall of Famer has a photo from their first pitch ever that we are aware of! Photo has a light crease across the top but otherwise it is really nice with exceptional clarity.
