One of the saddest tales of the era is that of Ross Youngs. Superstar ballplayer and a popular teammate who was taken at the height of his career by brights disease. His career coincided with World War One and the scrap paper drives that ensued. Limitations on the amount of paper products that were used or produced made for images and collectibles from early in Youngs his career almost non-existent, with this 1919 photograph being one of the best (if not THE best) produced. Original silver gelatin photograph has clarity so outstanding that the individual wood grains on Youngs' bat can be seen with the naked eye. An interesting split grip is being displayed proudly as he stands in his snow white uniform. Issued by the obscure "Central News Service" and with full paper caption on the back (loose but taped back on by a newspaper archive). Photo is in great shape but has some editorial pinholes being the only flaw. An outstanding pre-rookie image as it predates even his earliest baseball cards by several years!
