It is hard to imagine what Mickey Mantle would have been capable of had this moment never occurred. Mantle went hard for a ball in the 1951 World Series, hearing nothing from his center fielder, he sped full speed to attempt a diving grab. Even though he was camped under it for a while, Joe DiMaggio waited until the last second to call off Mickey, forcing him to pull up awkwardly and rip out his knee. He would suffer from injuries to this knee for the rest of his life. The play is one of the most infamous in baseball history with this three-part composite photograph being one of the only vintage examples of the play known to exist. Issued by the Associated Press and with a full paper caption on the back that describes the action as well as carrying the important 1951 date! The importance of this image can not be overstated!
