The story of Lou Gehrig and his illness in 1939 resulting in his early retirement and premature death is well known to even the casual baseball fan. Images of Gehrig after his diagnosis abound as everyone clamoured to get a piece of the terminal superstar, but when this image was taken as Gehrig got off the airplane in Minnesota to undergo tests at the mayo Clinic, his prognosis was still good. A tragic photograph as Gehrig is smiling to photographers and hoping for the best, but he was already dying and had no idea! Issued by Acme and stamped on the back with a part of the paper caption (which has enough of the information to pinpoint the date and event) this is the only example of this moment in photography we have ever seen. An important piece of baseball history that we have never seen before!
