In 1948 Babe Ruth died of a throat ailment and while it is unsure exactly the nature of the disease, it is clear that his smoking was a major contributor to the problem and his early death. These factors make this 1944 photograph of Ruth in the hospital but still smoking his pipe a tragic reminder at the frailty of life and the legacy of Ruth.
