Impressive 1934 photograph of pioneer black athlete at the University of Michigan, Willis Ward. He was a superstar track and football athlete and only the second black player to get a varsity letter from Michigan's famed football team. He was excluded from the 1933 Georgia Tech game due to his race and endured things that nobody today could imagine. Overcoming his surroundings he became a successful lawyer after his athletic career! One of the best images of Ward in uniform we have ever seen, this shows him in uniform as a member of the track team.
