Incredible 1912 silver gelatin portrait photograph of the greatest early baseball idol of all time, Christy Mathewson. He was the first man to transcend the sport into something of a god-like figure that could be openly adored by men and women, young and old. The offered photograph forever captures the educated ballplayer with matinee looks in full uniform and posing in front of the dugout at the Polo Grounds. Issued by the New York Herald and dated on the back from shortly before the World Series, this is a clean and pure original with exceptional detail. Photo has some creasing but nothing major and it was sent to a conservator to be cleaned and flattened so it has mild restoration done, but nothing was added to the photograph that was not already here. Hundreds of images were taken of Mathewson over his career, but for our money this is his finest portrait ever taken at the ballpark! A completely new discovery, fresh to the hobby that is being offered here for the first time ever!
