On August 26, 1939 an event happened that seemed at the time to be a curiosity, but turned out to be one of the most important dates in sports history. WNBC-TV brought their cameras out to Ebbets field and along with Red Barber, they broadcast the first televised sports event in history, a baseball game between the Dodgers and the Reds. What is offered here looks like a familiar scene, an athlete being interviewed in front of a television camera, but in reality this was the FIRST time this had ever happened! Red barber, the young announcer of the Brooklyn Dodgers is interviewing Leo Durocher of the Dodgers as his team looks on in the background, not knowing what to do with the camera. A nice handwritten note on the back memorializes the occasion in beautiful penmanship and the image was used to publish an account of the event by the Sporting News. All things considered, this is one of the most important dates in sports history and this photo is the only original image from that day that we have ever seen!
