While Emmett Ashford has gone down in history as the first black umpire in the major leagues, it really should have been Osibee Jelks. He became one of the first to integrate the high minor leagues as a PCL umpire and here in 1961 he is seen holding his own against Don Hoak during a heated argument. Jelks was targeted to finally get his shot in the big leagues but retired from baseball abruptly after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, fearing for the life of himself or his family. An incredible piece of history that is being offered here forever.
