Original c. 1896 cabinet photo of a baseball game between the New York Giants and Princeton University. It was common in the 19th century for professional teams to play exhibitions against colleges. In the days before spring training these were seen as tune ups for the major leaguers because the college season started earlier, and since major league baseball was not as organized as it is today, it often provided scouting opportunities as well (sometimes the college teams would beat their professional guests!). The offered item is marked on the back "1896 Princeton v. N.Y. Giants" and this is a known image from Princeton. The crowd is packed in and the game is ongoing. Images such as this from the 19th century are very rare and this is a top notch example. Photo portion is perfect while the cardboard mount shows just the slightest hints of wear on the corners as would be expected from a 115 year old relic of the game of baseball.
