Elmer Smith is one of a large number of baseball players who were stars for a time and then faded. In an era before trainers and MRI's, anyone was one injury away from a life of obscurity back on the farm or the coal mines. Elmer Smith is one of those players who burst onto the scene, did very well for a time, was billed as "the next Ty Cobb" and then faded. When this photo was taken in 1917 however, he was a true star in baseball and this powerful photograph captures him perfectly. He would have his best year as a member of the 1920 Indians championship squad and this is one of his greatest images ever taken. There is some editorial paint discoloration on the front from artistic use but it looks great with a date stamp on the back.
