1912 Intense portrait photograph of Boston Red Sox infielder Steve Yerkes in uniform and stamped on the back by photographer Charles Conlon. When we first saw this image we thought there was damage to the face of Yerkes, but we had no idea that he actually was born with burn marks on his face making him an underrated player that has physical issues to overcome. Adding to the appeal of the photograph is essentially a handwritten letter on the back from Charles Conlon to the editor at a newspaper or publication informing them what was going on with the birth marks on his face! We have never seen a letter by Conlon like this on the back of a photo as he was essentially protecting his integrity as a photographer by letting the person know that there was nothing wrong with his skill and that the Mark on Yerkes' face was already there! It actually shows a protective and prideful part of Conlon that we have never seen on a photograph before! The image is in nice shape in general with one small hole on the right eye of Yerkes from editorial use as well as some remnants from painting for publication. While the image of Yerkes is a desirable contact print by Conlon, the star is the note on back that gives us a glimpse into the life of the master photographer!
