1916 Crystal clear action photograph of baseball Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson from the New York Giants warming up at the ballpark in full uniform. Recently pulled from the archives of Underwood and Underwood and with handwritten notes from the photographer on the back, this is being offered here for the first time ever. Condition and quality make this a perfect 10/10. Photo is absolutely genuine to the 1910's and is the only example known to exist! The handwritten note on the back is from the original photographer and the number at the top references the negative. The white area around Mathewson was a frame put over the negative in order to get the shot of Mathewson alone and was done as a contact print so the photographer could then analyze the image before blowing it up to a bigger size, making this a sort of "proof" photograph before the final 8x10 shot which must have been magnificent! PSA generally calls these 1920's prints, but this is just an estimate going off the paper stock. We feel this is c. 1920 which places it within our five year window so please keep this in mind when bidding, but this is 100% off the original negative and NOT a "photo of a photo" which is of the most importance!
