King Cole led the National League in ERA in 1910 and won 20 games, seemingly on the fast track to superstardom. He followed this up with 18 wins in 1911, but like many pitchers of the deadball era, he suffered for overwork and his career declined fast! When this image was taken in 1913, he was with a new team and had a new outlook on his career, seen here sporting the New York Yankees uniform for the first time ever. A bold double weight masterpiece in great shape, he seems confident as he poses regally at the ballpark with his fantastic warm-up sweater. Issued by Underwood and Underwood and stamped on the back, this is a perfect 10/10 that is one of the only images of Cole we have ever handled. He was diagnosed with a tumor in 1915 and told he was dying, but he kept pitching anyways and did so up until he died in early 1916! A piece of baseball history that is among his greatest images ever taken!
