One of the most important photographs taken during WWII is "Into the Jaws of Death", by noted photographer Robert Sargent. He brilliantly captured the US Coast Guard invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, with soldiers piling out of the boat and heading toward danger, death, and victory. The sweeping image has been reproduced a million times and shown in movies across the world, but this is an original with US Coast Guard stamps on the back that date it to its original release. Condition is pretty nice with mild handling wear at the corners, consistent with newsroom handling, but presenting as one of the finest specimens we have ever seen. An important offering fresh from the archives of Underwood and Underwood, this is the first time it has ever been made available for sale. A rare image in original form, this is one of the top images of the 20th century and is on almost every collector's want list. We have handled less than five original examples of this photo in over twenty years of collecting and this is the best of the bunch! The partially removed "Underwood News" sticker on the back helps concretely date this to the 1940s and secure this as a "Type 1" from PSA as well!
