Today the artist Diego Rivera is a household name and regarded as one of the top artists of the 20th century. When this photo was taken in 1933, he was a bit of a novelty with little appeal to mainstream America. In fact, he was more known for his fresco painting being banned from Rockefeller Center than any actual artwork he had done! Here Rivera is teaching art in New York City at a school and is posed with brushes in hand in front of his recent creation that has only the outline sketched at this point! This is one of only a few original photographs of Rivera we have ever seen and this is by far the earliest, and the only one capturing him alone at work that we have ever seen. Issued by Acme and stamped on the back with a full paper caption as well, this is one of the most important artist photographs we have ever handled!
