When Ray Chapman was beaned and killed in late 1920, it sent shockwaves across Major League Baseball. Ralph Perkins was apparently so shaken by the incident that he had this early example of a batting helmet made. It is the earliest example we can find an image of and the first "hard helmet" we know of. Rare image with ties to the innovation of the game in great condition! This photo sold for $1175 in our April 2014 auction!
