One of the forgotten pioneers of early black baseball in America was Harold "Doc" Martin. He enrolled at the all-white Norwich Free Academy in 1916 and quickly became a star on the both the football and baseball fields, even playing some ice hockey and track as well. He served with distinction during WWI and then played for the 1921 Pittsburgh Keystones in the early Negro Leagues. The offered photograph captures Martin in uniform with the white-only Norwich baseball team and is one of the only images of this pioneer known to exist. Martin would eventually coach football in college and was called to service during WWII at which time he gave his life in service to America! An incredible piece of baseball history!
