The baseball world is filled with unrealized potential and in the case of John Westerwick, it was apparently a ton of potential. In this 1914 photograph of the huge pitcher warming up, it quotes that John McGraw was proclaiming him the next Christy Mathewson! Westerwick was trying to make the Giants and establish himself, with his blazing fastball, as one of the top pitchers in baseball. Instead, he would be cut, return to the bush leagues, and only play a few years of documented minor league baseball (1916-17 with Waterloo). A really great image with a wonderful story to tell, the paper caption on the back from Underwood and Underwood is a great touch as well. This is his only image we have ever seen!
