By the end of the 1960's, the space race was center stage for the entire world. In early 1960, it was seven guys out in a desert, training for a project without a real objective yet. In this fantastic official NASA photograph we find the seven original "Project Mercury" astronauts deep in the Nevada desert, each sporting makeshift hats and beard growth during intense training. Photo includes Gordon Cooper, Scott Carpenter, John Glenn, Alan Shepard, Virgil Grissom, Wally Schirra and Deke Slayton. One of the earliest and coolest images from the genesis of the "space race" we have ever handled.
