Chester Nimitz was one of the greatest military leaders of the 20th century, rising to fame and scoring decisive victories for the Americans during WWII. Any image taken before the 1940's of Nimitz is rare, but this one is beyond that into the stratosphere of incredible! Taken from WWI, around 1917-1918, the photo shows a young Lieutenant C.W. Nimitz in his military outfit and ready for the first go-around with the Germans. Issued by the American Press Association, there is extra paper on the back from publication but some of the vintage purple stampings are visible along with a 1919 file date! In 20 years of studying and archiving vintage photography, this is the ONLY vintage WWI photograph of Nimitz we have ever seen! An important piece of United States military history that is being offered here for the fist time ever!
