Built in 1929, the R101 was England's entry into the field of giant airships. All seemed to go well until its prize attempted it maiden overseas voyage. It crashed over France killing 48 of the 54 men on board. The disaster was the second worst of its kind up to that point and the loss of life eclipsed even the Hindenburg in 1937. It effectively ended England's foray into airships. The offered image shows the skeletal remnants of the R101 as is lay in a French Field and the twisted wreckage is almost artistic in its current state. Issued by Photopress of London and with full paper caption on the back.
