At it's core, this is a photograph of Tom Hughes from the Boston Braves, standing on the dugout steps and posing for a sea of photographers, but in reality, it is so much more than that. We are almost positive the photographer at center is none other than Charles Conlon capturing a shot of the pitcher. His style was to take images of players with their heads up against the cement of the dugout at the Polo Grounds as we can clearly see here. While there are five photographers in the image, the one at center has a round face and body size and shape almost identical to that of Conlon. While there will need to be additional research done to validate our feelings here that the man is indeed Conlon, we think this is an exceptional image of the most important photographer in baseball history plying his craft at the ballpark. This could be the only image of Conlon actually taking one of his famous photographs of players on the dugout steps! Issued by Underwood and Underwood and stamped on the back.
