A unique and absolutely incredible piece of baseball history, an entire research paper could be written about this image, and it basically has. At it's base what we have here is an album mounted August 21, 1897 game action photograph between Boston and Pittsburgh at the South End Grounds in Boston. On second base is Hall of Famer "Sliding" Billy Hamilton set to steal another base and taken during the season in which he broke Arlie Latham's career record. The batter is Bob Allen, on first is Fred Tenney. The pitcher is Jim Gardner of Pittsburgh and the umpire is Hall of Famer Hank O'Day. The photo as a snapshot in baseball history is significant and one of the best we have ever handled. The research, however, takes this into the next stratosphere as perhaps the most extensively documented moment in 19th century baseball we have handled. Using the scoreboard, advertisements, player rosters, and even the shadows on the field, the exact game this picture was snapped can be determined and it is likely the second Billy Hamilton and Tenney turned a double steal for another of Hamilton's record breaking swipes. An important piece of baseball history that will provide hours of fun for the new owner, pouring over the extensive research done on this snapshot of American history!
