About 1907 the three Mathewson boys got together for a formal studio portrait. It must have been a proud day in the family as Christy was the biggest name in baseball, Henry had just signed his contract to play with the Giants, and the younger brother Nick was perhaps the best of the bunch but still in high school. It was the high water mark for the three as tragedy would soon strike and never relent until fifteen years later, all three would be gone. The first would be Nicholas who got depressed that his brother and father would not allow him to drop out of school and sign a professional contract. He took a pistol to his head in a hay barn in 1909. The next would be Henry who got sick and died in 1917. Christy, the oldest, would outlive them all and passed away in 1925 after being gassed in WWI. The offered image is an incredible keepsake from the happiest moment in the lives of these brothers and this is the only known example of this important image. Crystal clear and bold, this is one of the finest images we have ever offered.
