Famous 1919 photograph of Boston Red Sox slugger Babe Ruth as he is seen learning the cigar business, one he hoped to venture into himself if he got his way and received a raise from the Red Sox. Ruth was in the middle of a three year contract with Boston, but owner Harry Frazee did not want to pay him. Instead, just two months after this photograph was taken, Ruth would be sold to the New York Yankees. One of his last images as property of the Red Sox, this was issued by Underwood and Underwood and is the only vintage example of the photo we have ever seen in any form! Stamped on the back, the photo exhibits crystal clarity and bold tones. There is chipping on the right side and a crease from news room storage, but the figure of Ruth himself is untouched and it remains an important piece of baseball history. Offered here for the first time ever, fresh out of a newspaper archive where it has sat for the last 101 years!
