Sol Butler might be the most important athlete that nobody has ever heard of. He was the fastest man in the world, competed in the 1920 Olympics (he would have won but he ruptured his tendon), played in both the early NFL as a starting quarterback and also professional baseball and started a barnstorming basketball team. All while being one of the first black men to do them all! It is hard to imagine doing the things he did, at the time he did them. He deserves to be in Hall of Fames and have his name remembered, but we admit that even our knowledge of this pioneer was limited until researching this photograph. He, in 1919, preparing for the Olympics the next summer, Butler wins the 100 yard dash at the Penn Relays! One of the only images of this important pioneer of American sports that we have ever seen in any form and offered here for the first time ever, fresh out of a newspaper archive. Stamped on the back by Underwood and Underwood and with a detailed paper caption as well.
